What is LEGIT?

What is LEGIT?

LEGIT (Lodging Emissions & Guest-night Impact Tracker) is a methodology that extends the calculation scope of per-night hotel emissions, enabling guests to understand the full environmental impact of their stay.

Expanding the calculation of per-night hotel emissions to include both direct (energy use, heating) and indirect emissions (food, toiletries, construction, supply chains) provides a fuller picture of the environmental impact of a hotel stay.

For Hotel & Operators

Driving Sustainability & Competitiveness

Manage Carbon More Effectively – Measure Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions to identify hotspots and target the biggest reduction opportunities.

Stay Compliant – Meet evolving sustainability reporting requirements, including CSRD, SECR and other disclosure frameworks.

Strengthen Your Competitive Edge – Support green certifications and attract sustainability-minded guests and corporate clients.

Reduce Costs – Lower emissions while improving operational efficiency through smarter energy use, waste reduction and sustainable sourcing.

Example: A serviced apartment provider identifying heating as a major emission source can install smart sensors to control heating and reduce overall consumption.

Transparency & Sustainability Integration

Provide Trusted Sustainability Data – Offer reliable per-night emissions data to support credible environmental claims.

Help Travellers Choose Better – Enable guests to compare accommodation based on carbon impact and make more sustainable decisions.

Stay Ahead of Industry Standards – Align with evolving sustainability frameworks and travel industry initiatives, including SBTi for Travel & Tourism.

Methodology

What is behind it

This extended emissions measurement methodology, building on the existing HCMI framework, has been developed by Hospitality operator Bob W in partnership with consultancy Furthr. It takes into consideration extra Scope 3 measurements, such as the environmental impact of construction materials, furniture and supplier emissions.

Getting Started

Hospitality operators looking to increase the level of accuracy of their emissions per night can follow the free LEGIT methodology and make their pledge in favour of industry transparency here.

The LEGIT methodology was developed by Tech-powered short term rental operator Bob W in collaboration with top tier sustainability consultancy Furthr, to tackle lacking existing standards. The methodology is simple to use, free, open source and available for all to use. The simple goal is to adopt an industry-wide apples to apples “per guest night” metric to answer the demands of the travellers and to secure the long term viability of the hospitality industry.
